CHARACTER INFORMATION

CHARACTER NAME: Ainsley Whitly
CANON: Prodigal Son
TIMELINE: End of 2x7 "Face Value"
AGE: 26

REFERENCE: Here.

PERSONALITY: Most people's impression of Ainsley are that of a Golden Child; she's always the brightest personality in the room and is really good at sliding into masks she needs in any social situation.

The pressure to be The Normal One in light of Malcolm's own Broken Pieces was high. Ainsley was often overlooked as a child because Malcolm's needs overtook her own; he was traumatized for what he found, that needed gentle hands and though Ainsley felt left to the side because of it, it was never something that seemed to affect her personal relationship with her older brother, whom she remained close to into adulthood.

She saw her father arrested, but she didn't know the details until later in life because her mother and her brother deemed it necessary to protect her. Being kept in the dark for her own protection became a theme in her life that drove Ainsley to search for answers, for the truth.

Ainsley is an ambitious, fierce woman who will go to sometimes surprising lengths to get what she wants, and usually what she wants is the truth. Why wait for someone else when she can get the answers or task done on her own? She’s a dedicated self-starter and will throw her whole self into any project she gets behind.

She cares deeply for her brother and mother and has a complicated mess of emotions about the father she barely knows. She's arguably one of the most stubborn people you might come across. Sometimes that ambition gets her in trouble when it tips over into the intensity of desperation to know, or achieve, or get whatever it is she's after. Once she decides something for herself, she will dig her heels in until she achieves it, and she's growing to care less and less about what lines she might have to cross to get there.

Perceptive skills come with the territory of the job, but this was probably a skill also grown within her home life. Ainsley is very good at picking up on subtle hints, be it tones in a person’s voice or making dots connect in pieces of evidence. Ainsley is good at her job for these traits, but it can make dealing with her in normal day-to-day moments more than a little aggravating. She wields huge amounts of Little Sister Energy in the way she always pokes her nose around in things that aren’t necessarily her business.

Though she sometimes takes things too far and crosses over into amoral or unethical actions in the name of it, Ainsley is fiercely protective of her family. In her summation, nothing is off-limits when it comes to doing so. This aggressive defense of her family is ultimately why she killed Nicholas Endicott. While that is an over-the-top, extreme end of this, her protective streak is, for the most part, one of the better parts about her and ties into a strong loyalty to the people she considers her own.

Ainsley also has no problem rolling with the punches that life gives her; being quick on her feet to adjust to a new hardship and a continually shifting situation, is part of what makes a Whitly. Things are constantly moving and changing, and often not for the better, but she's good at moving onto the next thing. She's quick-witted and tries to be a problem-solver; people may not like her solutions, but she's really good at turning a challenge into an advantage.

She also seems to be quite good at compartmentalizing, often boxing away emotions she doesn't like, or that won't help her in a given situation and that makes it easier to keep going.

Not everything about Ainsley is a positive, however, and she has a bad habit of making literally everything in her life into a competition, especially with her brother and even when it's not socially acceptable to be one. This cutthroat attitude to always "win" at everything sometimes overrides her empathy and blinds her to the impact her words or actions have on others.

Ainsley can be very impulsive and reckless, with little care to the impact of her actions to herself or others. At times, she doesn't seem to comprehend how far over social lines she goes for things, almost like she doesn't understand human emotion the way most people do.

Despite her always well put together appearances, there are some carefully hidden broken pieces of the serial killer’s daughter hidden behind the well-practiced mask of The Golden Child. A dark cloud may be lurking unseen behind the sunshine smile.

ABILITIES: Skilled investigative reporter; her ambition and stubbornness to find answers is Ainsley’s biggest asset. She doesn’t give up, and will always keep searching. She has any/all teachings of etiquette school under her belt.

No powers or otherwise supernatural abilities, no combat training; knows basic first aid; might be learning a thing or two from her dad's journal about murder?
PERSONAL EFFECTS: Her clothes and her cellphone is all.
PRIZED POSSESSION: Her dad's trophy journal, detailing all of the ways he killed his victims, and how it felt when he was doing it.
