Age: 26

Character snapshot: Ainsley Whitly is an ambitious, fierce woman who will go to sometimes surprising lengths to get what she wants, and usually what she wants is the truth. She cares deeply for her brother and mother and has a complicated mess of emotions about the father she barely knows.

Despite her always well put together appearances, there are some carefully hidden broken pieces of the serial killer’s daughter hidden behind a well-practiced mask of The Golden Child. A dark cloud may be lurking unseen behind the sunshine smile.

World description: Ainsley’s world and timeline are both much the same as our own; she lives in New York City and the year is 2020 and all that year encapsulates for us with the global pandemic is a part of her own life as well. Ainsley personally spends most of her time between the studio where she works as a news anchor and beating the streets as an investigative reporter, her mother’s home, and her brother’s apartment. However, not much else is shown in the sense of "haunts" or frequented areas that Ainsley may have around the city.

History: Daughter of an heiress of old money and a world-renowned surgeon, Ainsley Whitly’s life was well-privileged and full of the best schools, and probably just about anything she might want.

She was only 5 years old when her 10 year old brother Malcolm made a call to the police that would change their lives forever. Malcolm had found the body of a woman shoved in a box in their father's "hobby room"; the call lead to the arrest of Dr. Martin Whitly in 1998. Ainsley wouldn’t come to know the full truth of that night for years, long-sheltered by both her brother and her mother, Jessica, in effort to protect the youngest Whitly.

Jessica’s primary focus through their most formative years became Malcolm and his trauma and, intended or not, this pushed Ainsley into the position of needing to be the normal one, not traumatized and dealing with harsh realities no child should ever have to deal with; the golden child and star achiever amongst the starlight on their father's crimes.

Malcolm drew lines in the sand between himself and his father by becoming a profiler to put people like Martin to justice; and in a similar way, being sheltered from the reality of her father’s status as a serial killer gave Ainsley a fierce drive to uncover mysteries and find the truth of situations that eventually led to her job as an investigative reporter.

Just before she shows up to Mathias, Ainsley has been harassed by Nicholas Endicott, a man that has spent 20 years blackmailing her father; after Martin gave up the truth of how they knew each other, Endicott vowed to ruin the remaining Whitly’s lives. In their earlier meeting about him, Martin insisted the only way to take care of Endicott was for Malcolm to murder him.

Malcolm arrives and finds Ainsley with Endicott, a back-and-forth goes on between them, with Malcolm trying to diffuse the situation, a gun in his hand he can’t make himself use, while Endicott declares how he plans to frame Malcolm for murder. Suddenly, Ainsley grabs a knife and slits Endicott’s throat.

In the seconds after both the knife and the body hit the floor, she comes back around and asks Malcom what just happened; her brother assures her it’s all going to be okay, before taking the opportunity to use her confusion to tell her he did it, and go about disposing of the body with the help of his father on the phone.

What are your character’s mental/emotional strengths?
Ambitious: Ainsley is a real go-getter, do-it-herself sort of person. Why wait for someone else when she can get the answers or task done on her own? She’s a dedicated self-starter and will throw her whole self into any project she gets behind.

Perceptive: It comes with the territory of the job, but was probably a skill also grown within her home life. Ainsley is very good at picking up on small and subtle hints, be it tones in a person’s voice or making dots connect in pieces of evidence.

Resilient: Ainsley is the type to bounce back quickly from things. She may get knocked down but it’s never for long.

What are your character’s mental/emotional weaknesses?
Headstrong/stubborn: Ainsley might be one of the most stubborn people you’ll ever meet. She wants what she wants and her ambition sometimes tips over into a more intense side of it: she goes to sometimes crazy length to get what she wants. Once she decides something for herself she will dig her heels in until she achieves it.

Nosy/always wants the answers: Ainsley is good at her job for these traits but it can make dealing with her in normal day-to-day moments more than a little aggravating. She wields huge amounts of Little Sister Energy in the way she always pokes her nose around in things that aren’t necessarily her business.

Blackouts: Though it has only happened once so far, she has the potential to be susceptible to blacking out without memory of what she may have done during that time.

What events or circumstances in your character’s past have impacted them the most?
Father’s arrest: Though incredibly young when it happened, seeing her father taken away in handcuffs isn’t an image easily forgotten. The sheltered way the situation of her father’s murders was handled with her also contributes to a lot of her hangups, particularly about being lied to (even for good reasons or under the guise of protecting her— perhaps especially then).

Endicott’s death: While she doesn’t remember it clearly thus far, Ainsley still remembers being covered in blood and the dead body on her mother’s living room floor. This is understandably upsetting and disturbing to her, regardless.

What impressions do others tend to have of your character and how do those impressions differ from who your character truly is?
Most people's impressions of Ainsley are a Golden Child; she was a studious child, and has turned into an ambitious pursuer of her dreams. She's always the brightest personality in the room and is really good at sliding into masks she needs in any social situation.

The pressure to be The Normal One in light of Malcolm's own Broken Pieces was high. Ainsley was often overlooked as a child; she saw her father arrested, but she didn't know the details until later in life. Being kept in the dark became a theme in her life and drove Ainsley to search for answers, for the truth, and it instilled in her the drive she has as an investigative reporter.

The truth is, though hers is not as obvious and on the surface as Malcolm's, Ainsley is broken, too.

What motivates your character?
Wanting answers.
The truth.
Getting into the teeth of a good story.
Her family. Especially her mother and brother.

How does your character handle crisis or adversity?
Not by stabbing people or bathing in the blood of her enemies that’s for sure She can be pretty level-headed in a crisis. Logical and not one to immediately jump to panic, it’s how she can report even the most gruesome and upsetting news stories without letting emotions get too tangled into it.

In terms of arguments/disagreements... she is very likely to firmly dig her heels in on whatever side of it she lands on. She can be petty and one-sided or have tunnel vision during an argument. Ainsley isn’t afraid to shout her piece of mind at anyone, either.

Skills, abilities, and physical weaknesses:
Her ambition and stubbornness to find answers is Ainsley’s biggest asset. She doesn’t give up, and will always keep searching. She has any/all teachings of etiquette school under her belt.

Physically speaking, there isn’t a lot that’s very intimidating about her. She’s 5'5" and probably not 120lbs soaking wet. She doesn’t have any kind of overbearing strength or any fight training of any kind.

Inventory: Just a blood-soaked outfit
HORROR INFO
What aspects of your character are you most interested in exploring in a horror setting?
Blackouts, and the way that will affect her mentally. It’s happened once, and could feasibly happen again, with or without violence attached. I’m open to either or both.

Her (somewhat, currently hidden) darker side. She just killed a man, there’s clearly a lot to unpack.

Ainsley digging deep into the lore/mystery of the town.

What is your character’s mental state upon entering the game? Thoroughness is appreciated here.
Ainsley is both very upset and very confused. A man just fell over dead in her mother’s living room and she’s soaked in blood but her brother swears everything will be fine and that he’d done it. She is definitely in a state of shock.

Later, she’ll be a little more fragile than she normally might due to her missing memories, and how much that taps on issues she has with being lied to and kept on the dark.

What unsettles and frightens your character? What sort of encounters would chip away at your character’s psychological stability?
Anything that messes with her memories right now will be super upsetting for her because she’s already dealing with not really knowing what just happened back home.

Her brother being in danger while she’s powerless to help or save him.

Hallucinations would get to her a lot due to her brother’s issues with them and wondering if the potential for her to have them has always been there, or is it just this place.

What horrifying events or genre elements would you like to see utilized in the game?
I'm pretty pleased with all the elements we've been met with so far and don't have any additional suggestions!
